What does "Begin a battle between this Unit and it and only perform the damage step" mean?
Begin a battle between the two Units specified by the effect and perform the damage step. Do not perform the attack, block, and action steps. The two Units deal damage to each other as they would in a normal battle, and after resolving all triggered effects, the battle ends and you return to the main phase.
If I use this second effect to begin a battle between this Unit and an enemy GD02-073 Carta's Graze Ritter (Ground Type), does its "During your opponent's turn, the enemy Unit battling this Unit gains <First Strike>" effect activate?
Yes, it does. With the exception of 【Attack】 and "when a Unit attacks" effects, effects that activate during battle are activated even during a battle started by an effect.
If an enemy Unit is destroyed in a battle started by this second effect, does that fall within the criterion "when this Unit destroys an enemy Unit with battle damage"?
Yes, it does.
