What does "Begin a battle between them and only perform the damage step" mean?
Begin a battle between the two Units specified by this effect and perform the damage step. Do not perform the attack step, block step, or action step at this time. Like a normal battle, the Units deal damage to each other, and after resolving all triggered effects you advance to the battle end step before returning to the main phase.
When I use this effect to begin a battle with an enemy GD02-073 Carta's Graze Ritter (Ground Type), does its "During your opponent's turn, the enemy Unit battling this Unit gains <First Strike>" effect activate?
Yes, it does. Effects that activate during battle apart from effects like 【Attack】 and "When [...] attacks" activate even during battles initiated by effects.
When I destroy an enemy Unit in a battle initiated by this effect, does that fall within the criterion "when this Unit destroys an enemy Unit with battle damage"?
